UC Davis Men’s and Women’s Water Polo are offering a water polo camp to girls and boys from 7th to 12th grade.  The camp will be held at UC Davis’ Schaal Aquatic Center on June 9 through June 10.  The camp will be limited to the first 100 boys/girls who sign up. Davis Water Polo Club’s summer session 2012 starts soon!  Practices will begin on May 14 for high school level and May 29 for age group level.  All practices will be held at UCD Schaal Aquatic Center.  DWPC will also have sessions for Rugrats (4th grade and under/Ages 5 to 9) and Novice players.  Several tournaments are also planned for the summer including the 2012 National Junior Olympics.   DWPC is offering a $15 family discount on registrations received by May 20.  DWPC will also be holding a Round Table Pizza Fundraiser/Registration Night at Round Table Pizza in Davis on May 20 from 6 pm to 8 pm.  A portion of proceeds from pizza sales will go to DWPC.  Just mention that you are with DWPC when purchasing your pizza.  Round Table Pizza is located at 2151 Cowell Blvd., Davis.

Davis Water Polo Club had two teams participate in the 18th annual San Diego County Cup water polo tournament.  The 8th grade and under boys placed second and the 6th grade and under girls placed 6th in one of the largest age group tournaments in California.  The 8th grade boys defeated Santa Barbara “B” 11 to 3, Sharks 11 to 8, Lamorinda (a northern California team) 8 to 7, and Chino Hills Area Water Polo (CHAWP) also 8 to 7.  They defeated Buena Park 9 to 4 in the semifinal which brought them to the championship game.   They faced Bishops in the final match where they lost 9 to 5.  Coached by Brian Masson and Jamey Wright, the 8th grade and under boys team includes Daniel Alvarez, Matthew Blackwell, Peter Blumberg, Nick Borowsky, Lucas Brown, Garrett Dawson, Erik Echeona, Tucker Fisk, Jensen Geist, Kyle Katzenmeyer, Jack Liu, Nick Masson, Resse Peterson, George Van Voorhies, and Cameron Wright.

The 6th grade and under girls team finished 6th overall out of 16 teams.  They defeated Laguna 7 to 0, Rosebowl 5-2 and 7-2, and tied CHAWP, 7 to 7.  They lost to International and Riverside in the final games.  Coached by Tom Brown, the 6th grade and under girls include Emily Blackwell, Scout Brown, Sofia Dolan, Reese Oliver, Keianna Pineda, Esperanza Razo, Rachel Redman, Emily Tapio, Sara Valdes-Chabot, Makena Wahl, and Avery Wahover.

The website for the 2012 USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics is now available.  The website includes information on pool venues and tournament format.  The schedule for the 2012 USA Water Polo NJOs will also be posted there.  The men/boys will be playing July 28 – July 31, 2012 and the women/girls playing August 2 – 5, 2012.  The 10 & U mixed National Championship will be played August 2 – 5th in conjunction with the women/girls divisions.  Davis Water Polo Club will be participating in the 2012 Junior Olympics.  Teams must qualify first through their zone.  The boys Junior Olympic qualifying tournament will be held on June 16 – 17, 2012; the girls Junior Olympic qualifying tournament will be held on June 23 – 24, 2012.  More information will be posted.

The DWPC sent four teams to the 2012 Winterfest Age Group Water Polo tournament in Los Alamitos, California.  The tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the country.  The DWPC sent two 14U boys teams, a 14U girls team, and a 12U girls team to the tournament.  The 12U girls finished 8th overall in the competitive AA division.  The 12U girls, coached by Tom Brown, defeated Corona Del Mar 16 to 6 and Trojan 16 to 9.  They lost by close margins to 680 Drivers (San Ramon), International, and in the final match against Santa Barbara.  The 12U girls team includes Emily Blackwell, Scout Brown, Sofia Dolan, Brooke Doten, Reese Oliver, Keianna Pineda, Rachel Redman, Emily Tapio, Avery Warhover, Moira Williams, and Makena Wahl.  The DWPC Boys 14&U Blue Team, coached by Jamey Wright and Brian Masson, finished 5th in the Boys A Division going 3-1 and winning its last 3 games.  Davis led off the tournament with CHAWP (Chino Hills) a southern California heavy weight, and despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead ending up losing 8-6. Having cut CHAWP’s lead to 1 with less than a minute, Davis pulled it’s goalie in the last 13 seconds hoping to produce a turnover and chance to tie the game, only to give up CHAWP’s final goal.  In game 2 vs. Long Beach Shore water polo, Davis ran out to an 8-1 lead at half and never looked back, finishing the game with a 15-3 win.  In game 3 vs. Nor Cal rival Lamorinda from the East Bay, Davis again scored early and often holding a 4-0 lead early in the second quarter.  The game turned dramatically at that point, as Lamorinda scored 4 straight goals to tie the game and force a shoot-out, the water polo counter part to soccer’s penalty kicks.   Davis won in exciting fashion with the home town boys edging out Lamorinda 11-10.  The win propelled Davis into the 5th place game where Davis prevailed 11-6 over Cerritos of southern California.  Davis’ high performance offense averaged over 10/goals/game with their scoring  paced by Cameron Wright, Tucker Fisk, Daniel Alvarez, Nick Borowsky, and Reese Peterson. Constant counter attack pressure was brought to bear by Sean Kos and Peter Blumberg, while stellar defense was provided by goalie Jensen Giest and two meter defenders Stephen Csaposs and Nick Masson, all of whom combined to limit the opposition to 5 goals/game in regulation.  The DWPC Boys 14&U White Team, coached by Jamey Wright and Brian Masson, finished 7th in the Boys 14&U B Division.  They defeated Capistrano Valley and Pacific Polo in bracket play and defeated Laguna Beach in the final match.  The 14U Boys White team included:  Saihej Bajwa, Matthew Blackwell, Lucas Brown, Henry Burke, Garrett Dawson, Erik Echeona, Jack Liu, Alex Preisler, Scott Sodetquist, George Van Voorhies, Nick Masson, and Peter Blumberg.  The DWPC Girls 14U team, coached by Kandace Waldthaler, finished 14th in the competitive AA division playing against teams from all over California.

Congratulations to Davis Water Polo Club’s 12& Under Girls team.  They won the bronze medal at the Rock-Tober 12&Under Classic held October 21 -23 in Denver, Colorado.  The 12U Girls team include:  Scout Brown, Hailey Cavanaugh, Annie Fullerton, Anastasia Golyakova, Keianna Pineda, Espy Razo, Madelyn Reeves, Sarah Valdes-Chabot, Tori Vancourt, Moira Williams, Avery Warhover, Emily Blackwell, and Coach Tom Brown.  The team defeated Neptunes, a team from Colorado, 12 to 8 in the bronze medal match.  For more information and results of the tournament, click here.

About the tournament:  ROCK-TOBER CLASSIC is a brand new Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) based tournament for athletes 12 & under.  Sportsmanship and positive play will be the focus.  Teams that qualify through their zone will be invited to submit their team “theme song” and come to Colorado ready to rock out and honor the game!

Congratulations to the 15 Davis Water Polo Club athletes who received Academic All-American Honors for 2010-2011 from USA Water Polo.  USA Water Polo announced the 2010-2011 Academic All-Americans on September 12.   This is the fifth year of the Academic All-American Program that honors students for the excellence not just in the pool but in the classroom as well.  Student-athletes had to have participated in a USA Water Polo National Championship to be eligible. In addition each student-athlete had to have at least a 3.6 grade point average with outstanding achievement going to those with a 4.0 (indicated with a *).  The following DWPC athletes receiving 2010-2011 Academic All-American Honors are:

Congratulations to all of the Davis Water Polo Club teams that competed in the 2011 National Junior Olympics last month.  Each team finished above what they were seeded in the tournament.  Below is the article that was submitted to the Davis Enterprise on August 31, 2011 that summarizes the tournament:

“Eight Davis Water Polo Club squads competed at the 2011 United States Junior Olympics Age Group National Championships earlier this month in Orange County.

The local men’s 21U squad took fourth after giving up a last-minute goal in their game.

The DWPC’s boys 16U team — featuring Connor Stapleton, Conrad McCarthy, Valente Dolcini, Brad Nicholson, Graham Fullerton, Jack Blattner , Garrett Fisk, Alex Borowsky, Dillon Newsome, Brandon Rueda, Tyler Ujifusa, Bryan Poole, Alex Labass, Chad Prizmich and goalie J.J. Stark. — started with five straight victories and ended up taking third in the Silver Division.

Davis’ boys 12U group played in the top division and took 13th place against some strong competition. Leading the way were Tucker Fisk, Daniel Alvarez, Scott Soderquist, Alex Preisler, Jack Lui, Peter Blumberg, George Van Vorhis, Steven Csaposs, Nick Masson, Jake Taylor, Matthew Blackwell, Kyle Katzenmeyer and Cameron Wright.

The local coed 10U squad got great goalkeeping from Emily Blackwell and contributions from Trey Doten, Brooke Doten, Quinn Brown, Dane Peterson, Bryce Gregg, Jack Johnson, Reece Oliver, Teddy Oliver, Avery Warhover, Maddison Katzenmeyer and Keianna Pineda to take fourth place in the Gold Division.

Davis’ 12U girls started with two good wins and ended up taking 14th in the Platinum Division. Blackwell, Alena Alverez, Scout Brown, Hailey Cavanaugh, Brooke Doten, Annie Fullerton, Josephine Personius, Esperanza Razon, Rachel Redman, Maddy Reaves, Sara Valdez, Tori Van Court and Moira Williams all played well for the locals.

The DWPC’s 14U girls team powered through with just one substitue and, with a last-game victory over Windy City, secured 19th place in the Gold Division. Maddy Lilliedoll, Kendall Doten, Alyssa Alverez, Megan Femling, Kinsey Van Deynze, Maggie Oys, Julie Zanobini and Jennalyn Barthels played their hearts out for Davis.

Taking fifth in the Gold Division, the local 16U girls squad got strong contributions from goalie Ashley Amey and field players Alicia Demaree, Mara Dominguez, Claire Evans, Karly Hammack, Heather Johnson, Lauren Owens, Colby Stapleton, Emmy Savidge, Katie Van Deynze, Emma Meads, Marisa Zanobini and Brinnley Barthels.

Davis 18U girls played in the Platinum Division and made it into the elite 12 and then played a thriller against perpetually strong Commerce Aquatics. After regulation, the game was tied 11-11 and DWPC fell in a shootout.”

Davis Water Polo Club’s 14U Boys, 14U Girls, and 12U Boys and Girls teams all placed at the Santa Cruz Classic Tournament held on July 16 and 17.  The Boys 14U placed second overall with wins over Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Sharks.  In the title game, they lost by one point to Lamorinda Water Polo.  The Girls 14U team went undefeated with wins over Central Valley, Stanford, and Atherton in the title game.  The Boys 12U and Girls 12U team met each other in the title game!  In bracket play, the Girls 12U had wins over Oakdale and Stanford while the Boys 12U had wins over Lamorinda and Santa Clara Valley.  In the title game, the 12U Boys and Girls teams were mixed with the game ending in a tie!!  The 12U teams took home both the first and second place trophies.
